Surprise was essential and secrecy in the planning was paramount for the Normandy Landings in June 1944. No one was allowed to recce the Normandy beaches without the express permission of the Prime Minister. Two beach recces, putting swimmers ashore, were conducted: one on Gold Beach (31 Dec 1943) and the other on Omaha Beach (Jan 1944). They were conducted by a special forces group called Combined Operations Pilotage Parties (COPP). This talk about these two COPP operations includes a video (filmed in 1993) of Logan Scott-Bowden (one of the swimmers) on Omaha Beach, describing the recce and his pilotage role on D Day.
