We will explore aspects of mother and daughter relationships in literature through reading three novels which span the centuries. First, Pride and Prejudice (1813) by Jane Austen is a novel that many of us will have read but often from the point of view of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy. However, family relationships are key and are given particular treatment by Austen. In Wives and Daughters (1866) by Elizabeth Gaskell mother and daughter relations between protagonist Molly and stepmother Clare and her daughter Cynthia are significant, as is the historical context. Finally, Amy and Isabelle by Elizabeth Strout (1998) highlights the complexity of relations between mother and daughter, with some themes which resonate with earlier novels.

The Tutor is Dr Denise Hanrahan-Wells whose expertise lies in both American and English literature. She has taught at Winchester University, the WEA, and the LCA. It will be helpful if you have a copy of the books in class. A list of weekly readings will be issued once you have registered.
